Management of Spontaneous Volunteers in Disasters

G-489 – Management of Spontaneous Volunteers in Disasters

When disaster strikes, people want to help — often before a formal volunteer system is in place. Effectively managing these spontaneous volunteers can be an important part of community response and recovery.

This Wisconsin Emergency Management course introduces the skills and planning considerations needed to manage people who want to assist following a disaster but are not affiliated with an established disaster relief organization. Participants will explore how spontaneous volunteers can support disaster operations, as well as challenges that can arise when volunteer efforts and resources are not effectively coordinated.

Relevant for COAD Partners

This course isn’t just for emergency managers. Wisconsin Emergency Management identifies a broad range of applicable disciplines, including volunteer organizations, human services, public health, health care, education, government administration, public safety, and others.

COAD partners and community organizations that may coordinate volunteers, work alongside spontaneous volunteers, or support disaster response and recovery may find this course particularly valuable.
